ABSTRACT

The daily use of facemask to prevent virus transmission increases the negative effect on the environment because of improper waste disposal. Due to the absence of baseline data, the impact of facemask and medical waste generation, as well as the community's management practice, should be studied to avoid further environmental degradation. In this study, we surveyed 384 respondents and conducted computational analysis to provide an overview of the household's facemask usage and ecological footprint in combating Covid-19. Results showed that most respondents (48.7%) use two facemasks per day. Thus, an estimated 417,834 facemasks are disposed daily, generating 3,585 kg/day of additional waste. The average medical waste of Covid-infected individuals is 3.29 kg per day per capita. This yields 22,438 kg. of CO2 eq., which could contribute to the global warming potential; however, there is also a potential recovery of 61.572 gigajoules of energy for power generation. Most respondents are aware of proper facemask waste management practices, but some lacks application regarding responsible waste disposal. Despite the contribution of facemask to the overall solid waste generation, the city's current management remains a challenge since disposable facemasks are potentially mixed with other types of waste from its storage, collection, and disposal. ABSTRACT

With the rise of affordable next-generation sequencing technology, introgression-or the exchange of genetic materials between taxa-has become widely perceived to be a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. Although this claim is supported by several keystone studies, no thorough assessment of the frequency of introgression across eukaryotes in nature has been performed to date. In this manuscript, we aim to address this knowledge gap by examining patterns of introgression across eukaryotes. We collated a single statistic, Patterson's D, which can be used as a test for introgression across 123 studies to further assess how taxonomic group, divergence time, and sequencing technology influence reports of introgression. Overall, introgression has mostly been measured in plants and vertebrates, with less attention given to the rest of the Eukaryotes. We find that the most frequently used metrics to detect introgression are difficult to compare across studies and even more so across biological systems due to differences in study effort, reporting standards, and methodology. Nonetheless, our analyses reveal several intriguing patterns, including the observation that differences in sequencing technologies may bias values of Patterson's D and that introgression may differ throughout the course of the speciation process. Together, these results suggest the need for a unified approach to quantifying introgression in natural communities and highlight important areas of future research that can be better assessed once this unified approach is met.

ABSTRACT

The challenges of SARS-CoV-2 have frightened the world due to a lack of effective treatment. Many clinicians have adopted drug repositioning because of the urgent need to contain the viral pandemic. Several studies have demonstrated the in vitro and in vivo antiviral efficacy of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2. However, the cardiovascular toxicity of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine stand as a limitation to their general use to treat SARS-CoV-2. Thus, it is necessitated the search for an adjuvant that could be used alongside these treatments to mitigate the undesired effect. The cardioprotective activity of resveratrol could serve to mitigate the cardiovascular toxicity of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties synergistically with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine could also mitigate the antiviral activity of SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we explore chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine for SARS-CoV-2 treatment and suggest their synergetic use with resveratrol as a recommended therapy to mitigate cardiovascular toxicity and contribute to their antiviral effects. © 2020 by the authors.
